I'm late on this (I've been too busy at work to goof off and hang out here), but you mentioned the Circle Star. I'm from San Mateo, just a few miles north, and I saw a few shows there. It was "in-the-round" and the stage slowly turned. Zappa played there annually, as did Arlo Guthrie and others like Tony Bennett, Sammy Davis, and quite a lot of jazz guys.
Thanks for bringing up a long-forgotten venue and inspiring a few memories
